New theme, who dis?

If you're reading this on my site instead of in a feed reader: hi, yes, it looks different. πŸ‘‹

Honestly, the old look had gotten stale. It was the stock Webstead default theme with every setting left at its default. Cream background, orange accent, fancy serif headings. Nice! But it looked like every Webstead site, and I wanted mine to feel like mine.

So now it's a terminal.

What changed

  • A prompt for a header. aaron@crowdersoup:~$, with a blinking cursor (it stops blinking if your system asks for reduced motion).
  • Monospace everything. JetBrains Mono, square-ish corners, no drop shadows.
  • Dark and light mode. It follows your system setting until you hit the [theme: dark] button in the corner, then it remembers what you picked. Dark is phosphor green on near-black, and light is more of a "printed it out" paper terminal.
  • Little details. [nav] links, ## in front of headings, and an -- EOF -- footer. Maps on my hikes and runs get darkened in dark mode too, so they don't blind you.

What didn't change

All the IndieWeb stuff. Microformats, webmentions, comments, IndieAuth, the Bridgy publish links: same markup as before. The new theme reuses every template from the default theme as is and only changes how things look. Your feed reader shouldn't notice a thing.

Two bugs, found for free

I built the theme as an inactive theme and previewed it before switching over, and the preview turned up two Webstead bugs:

  • Previews were getting cut off right before the last few scripts on the page, so things like the theme toggle just didn't work. That happened for every theme preview, not just mine. (webstead #161)
  • Maps were blank in previews because OpenStreetMap requires a Referer header and previews were sending none. I'd already fixed this once for the live site, then reintroduced it with previews. Oops. (webstead #162)

Both are fixed, so the next theme should be easier to try on.

Let me know what you think! And if something looks broken, that's a bug, not a vibe.
